Background of the Study
Online news platforms have emerged as influential channels for disseminating political information, significantly shaping public awareness and political discourse. In Enugu North, these platforms have become a primary source of news for many citizens, offering real-time updates and diverse perspectives on political events (Chukwuemeka, 2023). The digital nature of these platforms allows for interactive engagement, enabling readers to comment, share, and debate political issues, which enhances political awareness (Okeke, 2024). However, the rapid spread of information via these channels also presents challenges related to the verification of news content and the prevalence of biased reporting (Ezenwa, 2025). This study examines the role of online news platforms in shaping political awareness, investigating how these digital outlets influence the political perceptions and engagement of citizens in Enugu North. The research aims to determine whether the accessibility and interactivity of online news contribute positively to political literacy and public debate.

Statement of the Problem
While online news platforms have broadened access to political information in Enugu North, concerns about misinformation and bias persist. Many citizens find it challenging to discern between factual reporting and opinion-based content, which undermines informed political participation (Umeh, 2023). The lack of rigorous editorial standards and the potential for sensationalism further complicate the media landscape. This study seeks to identify the extent to which online news platforms shape political awareness and to explore the associated challenges in ensuring balanced and accurate reporting (Ikechukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of online news platforms on political awareness.

  2. To identify challenges related to bias and misinformation in digital news.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the quality of online political reporting.

Research Questions:

  1. How do online news platforms influence political awareness in Enugu North?

  2. What challenges exist in ensuring unbiased online reporting?

  3. What measures can improve the accuracy and reliability of online news?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Online news platforms significantly increase political awareness among citizens.

  2. Misinformation on digital platforms negatively affects informed political participation.

  3. Strengthening editorial standards improves the credibility of online news.

Significance of the Study
This study provides essential insights into the role of online news platforms in fostering political awareness. It offers recommendations for improving news credibility and combating misinformation, thereby supporting more informed civic engagement. The findings will be beneficial to media regulators, news organizations, and civic educators (Nwachukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to online news platforms in Enugu North Local Government and focuses exclusively on their impact on political awareness.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Online News Platforms: Digital media outlets that publish news content.
